Riviera Maya Has Its Perks | Caribbean Travel
Riviera Maya Travel Guide
Planning a trip to Mexico? Riviera Maya is a beautiful stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico.
There are many resorts to stay in and plenty of amazing things to see and do. We decided to have our honeymoon in Riviera Maya. It was the perfect choice for us. Neither of us had ever been to Mexico, and it was an affordable option for us to stay for an entire week. Most resorts are all inclusive with many restaurants on site to choose from. We stayed at The Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya Hotel and while there we tried every restaurant. The food was incredible. They also gave us a free “couple’s dinner” where we ate by candlelight on the beach under a gazebo. Basically straight out of a movie scene, right? The resort was great but what was most memorable was the beautiful scenery and natural wonder the Yucatan Peninsula had to offer.
Xel Ha is a natural water park, and it was one of my favorite parts of our entire trip. We were able to kayak through beautiful springs, jump off of cliffs into crystal clear blue water, and zipline. We were also able to rent bikes and ride around paths throughout the park. There were big colorful birds, iguanas, and Mexican mammals all over the park. It was incredible.
Tulum is an archaeological site that holds ancient Mayan ruins. The structures themselves were massive and the views from the cliff where they sat were jaw dropping. I felt like I was in a scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It was a very popular spot that had many tourists from all over the world. I remember there was someone in front of the restrooms collecting money to go in. So, be prepared for that.
We decided to do a water sports excursion. We rode ATVs through the mexican wilderness being lead by a guide. It was definitely a “follow the leader” type deal and you couldn’t really stop and get out and explore anywhere. We then rode jet skis and it was a very similar set up, just following a lead.
Playa Del Carmen
This might be an unpopular opinion but, going into downtown was my least favorite part of our trip. Everywhere you turned around there were people trying to sell you things, I don’t even like when someone tries to help me find something when I’m in a store, so I didn’t like that. We also thought “let’s get some real authentic Mexican food downtown!” so we tried a restaurant and it definitely left something to be desired. Our resort food was better. It was a bit of a let down for me personally.
